Skopje

The capital wears every era it has lived through at once — Roman aqueduct, Ottoman bazaar, Brutalist concrete, and a rebuilt centre that argues with itself. It is the loudest place in a quiet country, and most tours begin here.

Worth knowing

  • 01

Mother Teresa was born here in 1910; her memorial house stands on the old high street.

  • 02

An earthquake levelled the centre in 1963. The ruined railway station still reads 5:17.

  • 03

The Stone Bridge has carried traffic over the Vardar since Ottoman times.
